- **Language:** Classical Chinese

### [4.94](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2001.4.94)

> Ascending the hall, \[the Master\] said: The substance is empty yet possesses illumination; the mirror does not face an image yet is ever bright. The function is dense and without effort; like a pearl in a tray, it turns of itself. Causal conditions cannot bind it; birth and death cannot move it. Therefore it is said: Right within light there is darkness, do not meet it with darkness; right within darkness there is light, do not face it with light. Just like the front and back foot. How can one correspond like this? After a long pause, he said: Riding alone on a thousand-mile elephant beyond things; striking the golden bell beneath the ten-thousand-year pine.
