> At an informal gathering, \[the Master\] said: "Good brothers! The entire sky is of one color; the ice jar has not yet released the arrival of spring. The kalpa of emptiness has no dust; the withered tree already contains the news of blooming flowers. The stone figure ceases keeping time; the jade maiden abandons stepping on the loom. The moon fills the cold cliff: its brilliant divine light is not an illumination. Snow blankets the ancient road: the lingering nocturnal gloom is, after all, bewildering. The old ape sits and snaps the sunward-facing branch; the wondrous bird flies to roost in the shadowless tree. Just at such a time, how could the holy and the mundane be established? Even buddhas and patriarchs can hardly reach it. Transformations pervade the dusty realms, beyond all meritorious achievement; cutting off the ten directions, there are no abiding marks. Taking advantage of the time, one borrows the road; releasing the hands, one returns along the way. Before the Kunlun treads upon the gunwale of the moon-boat, the scenery of the barbarian lands has already spread into the Han realm. Passing through the marketplace with an empty breast; observing people with a cool eye. With a chattering tongue, one completely recounts the thoughts of a lifetime; with a drooping nose, what harm is there in rubbing against the family style? Going out the gate inside the body, the body is inside the gate; the object within the eye, the eye within the object. Seeing form, every single thing is Maitreya; hearing sound, every place is Avalokiteśvara. Mañjuśrī, amidst non-differentiating wisdom, manifests differentiated bodies; Samantabhadra, amidst differentiated realms, enters non-differentiating samādhi. In every place, there is naturally correct reception; throughout the twelve periods of the day, there is intrinsic dhyāna. Meeting Bodhidharma in confusion—who else is the same? The white bull and the wildcat nevertheless know it is there. Therefore it is said: 'Though the upright position is upright, it is nevertheless biased; though the biased position is biased, it is nevertheless complete. If the upright and biased intertwine into fragments, you lose the pearl in your hand, and it falls to the ground.' Does conducting oneself in this manner still constitute an authentic patch-robed monk? If you examine it closely, it is still not the place of transcendence of our school. What, in the end, is it?" After a long pause, he said: "In the jewel palace, no one fails to stand in attendance; if you do not plant parasol trees, you avoid the coming of the phoenix."
