### [6.56](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2001.6.56)

> If the patch-robed monks of our family are to transcend birth and death, they must dry up their bodies and cool their thoughts, thoroughly examining to the depths of the abyss, emptily congealing and completely illuminating. Piercing through the four great elements and five aggregates, look with an eye fixed before causes and conditions have combined, before the sense gates are formed, before being enveloped in the womb, and before emotional consciousness has begun to wander. What worry is there of not settling it? When settled like this, the patriarchs' nostrils and the patch-robed monks' life-pulse—holding fast and letting go—rest entirely in one's own freedom. Therefore it is said: 'When delusion ceases, quiescence naturally arises; when quiescence arises, knowing appears. When knowing arises, quiescence naturally extinguishes; clearly, there is only true seeing.'
