### [9.19](https://indike.org/pramana/in.bauddha.taisho.2001.9.19)

> Chan Master Tiantong of Siming composed these eulogies on the portraits of the Six Generations of Patriarchs; their meaning is genuine and their language wondrous, transcending the Buddhas and surpassing the patriarchs. Within the brush and ink of a person with clear eyes, there are naturally unique openings, which cannot be matched by worldly learning of literary composition. His daily output was very rich; my regret is only that I have not seen it all. When later students read these eulogies, they will know that the great good friend lodged his wondrous intent in this work; how could it be forgotten? Written by the old Chan monk Shigui on the tenth day of the third month in the guihai year of Shaoxing \[1143\].
