> Xuedou's verse says: "Duanji's complete dynamic function continues the subsequent tracks; / Why must upholding it require calm and leisure?" The great dynamic function and great dynamic activity of Huangbo—Linji alone continued his tracks. Bringing it forth allows no hesitation; if one deliberates, one falls into the realm of the skandhas. The Śūraṅgama Sūtra says: "As when I press my finger, the ocean-seal emits light; but as soon as you arouse your mind, the defilements arise first." "Juling raising a hand does not take much, / Cleaving Mount Hua into ten million layers." The spirit Juling possessed great spiritual power: with his hand he split Mount Taihua, letting the water flow into the Yellow River. Senior Monk Ding's mass of doubt was piled high like peaks; struck by Linji's slap, it instantly crumbled like tiles and melted like ice.
