> "The elk among elks, look at it, sir!" Patch-robed monks must possess the eye of the elk among elks, and have the head and horns of the elk among elks, possessing dynamic devices and active strategies. Even an eagle-winged ferocious tiger or a horned beast can only save its whole body and keep far away from harm. This monk at that time let his body fall straight down, saying to himself, "I am the elk." "Releasing one arrow, he runs three paces": Yaoshan said, "Watch the arrow!" and the monk fell down; Yaoshan said, "Attendant, drag this dead fellow out!" That this monk then ran away was quite good, yet he managed only to run three paces. "If he lives at five paces, he will chase the tiger with the herd": Xuedou said he feared only that at five paces he must die. If at that time he had leaped beyond five paces and lived, he could have joined the herd to chase the tiger. The horns of the elk among elks are as sharp as lances; when a tiger sees them, it too fears them and runs away. The elk is the king among deer; it constantly leads the herd of deer to chase tigers into other mountains. Later in the verse, Xuedou also shows that Yaoshan possessed a way to escape on the dynamic occasion: "From the start, the true eye has been entrusted to the hunter." Yaoshan was like a hunter skilled at shooting, while that monk was like the elk. At that time, when Xuedou ascended the hall, he brought up these words, gathered them into a single bundle of talk, and loudly called out a single phrase, saying, "Watch the arrow!" Those sitting and standing were all at once unable to rise.
