> The Master said: The four propositions are four slanders—like a great mass of fire, it cannot be entered from any of its four sides. The four propositions are four gates—like a cool and refreshing pond, it can be entered from all four sides.
> Years ago, when Wansong served as scribe at Daming, Venerable Heng of Tanzhe passed through Daming. In the dark of night he knocked at the gate and told the attendant, "I have burned incense to form an affinity." Tanzhe then allowed him an interview. Wansong requested instruction: "What is a living phrase? What is a dead phrase?"
> Zhe said, "Scribe, if you understand a dead phrase, it is also a living phrase. If you do not understand a living phrase, it is also a dead phrase."
> At that time I thought to myself, "The methods of an old adept are indeed distinct!"
> Today, looking at this monk's question, he obstinately insisted on pointing out the ancestral intention separately outside the four propositions and hundred negations. The three old fellows had similar heads. If one immediately took it as an understanding of leaving the four propositions and cutting off the hundred negations, it would be well to bury them in the same pit with this monk.
> Later, Tiantong's verse on Yangshan striking the mallet in a dream said, "Free from the four propositions and cutting off the hundred negations, / The illness of Master Ma and his sons needs no cure." Wansong says: What kind of mindset is that?
> "White head and black head—sons who can carry on the family." The \*Classic of Changes\*, hexagram Meng, nine in the second place: "A son able to carry on the family" means he can shoulder the family estate.
> "With phrases and without phrases—the dynamic that cuts off the flow." Wansong says: There are only ripples upon clear water; there are no heaven-surging waves.
> "Magnificently they cut off the road of the tongue, / And should laugh at that old awl of Vaiśālī." The Sanskrit word Vaiśālī is translated as "Broad and Magnificent"; it is the name of the city where Vimalakīrti resided. When Mañjuśrī asked about the Dharma gate of non-duality, Vimalakīrti was silent. This monk asked Master Ma and his sons, and entangling vines covered the ground. Tell me, where is the point to be laughed at?
> "If only one can avoid offending the taboo of the reigning sovereign, / That already surpasses the tongue-severing talent of the former dynasty."
