> The Master said: 'The clouds and water of both halls were completely embroiled'—even now their dispute has not been settled. If Tiantong had not understood Nanquan's testing of clues, they would often fail to distinguish the crooked from the upright. When the crooked and upright are distinct, how do you judge? Better to cut them off with a sharp sword and bury them in a single pit! Not only does this put an end to an unfinished gong'an of that time, it also clears the air across the realm for a thousand ages. At that time, Nanquan was a superior teacher and his disciple was formidable; seeing the assembly silent, he raised it to Zhaozhou to reveal that there was someone in the community. Zhaozhou took off his straw sandals, put them on his head, and walked out. Truly, 'This Way has not perished; an intimate knower is praiseworthy.' Confucius said, 'Heaven has not yet let this culture perish.' Look at master and disciple: their ways accord, singing and beat following each other—nothing can compare to it. According to the rules of posthumous titles: 'One who causes the source of springs to flow is called Yu'; also, 'One who receives abdication and achieves success is called Yu.' In the 'Tribute of Yu' in the \*Book of Documents\*: 'He guided the River from Jishi to Longmen.' In \*Huainanzi\*: 'Gonggong's forces were strong and ferocious; he contended with Emperor Yao for merit, and when his strength was exhausted, he struck Mount Buzhou and died. The pillar of heaven snapped because of it. Nüwa smelted stones of five colors to mend the sky.' In \*Liezi\*: 'When yin and yang lose measure, it is called a fissure; smelting the essence of the five constants is called mending.' Yungai Ben, raising the case of Dongshan removing Head Monk Tai's fruit table, said, 'Though Dongshan has an awl and hammer to break empty space, he nonetheless lacks the needle and thread to patch it up.' Nanquan is like Great Yu boring through mountains and penetrating the sea, manifesting his spiritual working. Zhaozhou is like Nüwa smelting stones to mend the sky, rounding off the topic. Wansong says: Zhaozhou at eighteen knew how to break up his home and disperse his estate; who knows how much livelihood he possessed? 'Putting straw sandals on his head was a bit better'—tut! Having nowhere to go, he made this maneuver! Baofu Zhan said, 'Even though it is so, it is still just a pair of worn straw sandals.' Nanquan, coming down from on high, said, 'Had you been here, you would have saved the cat.' Cuiyan Zhi said, 'Great and small Zhaozhou could only save himself, letting \[Nanquan\] off with a move.' Tiantong said, 'Coming from difference, it is still a clear mirror; only this true gold does not mingle with sand.' You can only push a boat with the current; you do not know how to hold the rudder against the wind. And now, you bunch come forward—there is not even a cat, so what dogs are you fighting over? \[The Master\] chased them down with his staff.
