> The Master said: Tiantong first versified the gong'an with four lines, and then laid out the outline, displaying the transforming style. Zhaozhou picked up a blade of grass and used it as a sixteen-foot golden body; the Bhagavān pointed it out in the face of the wind, and Śakra casually picked it up. Tiantong versified it with person and environment intermingled. Not only the ancient sages: if you right now can act as master within the dust, from outside the transformation \[subjects\] will also come as guests. Now tell me: the romantic Consort Liu founding this Bao'en Hermitage—is it the same as or different from Śakra planting the grass? The Master held up his whisk and said: 'A thousand years of permanent property; a single morning's monk.'
