> The Master said: When the ancients encountered things according to the moment, they clarified the one great affair prior to the empty kalpa. The Lotus Sūtra says: "Pure, unmixed, fully possessing the marks of pure, clean brahma-practice." Commentators take this to mean that white is the basis of all colors, and the One Vehicle is the source of all vehicles, but they do not speak of there being something beyond the color white. Therefore, Yangshan pointed to the snow lion and instructed the assembly, saying, "Is there anyone who can surpass this color?" Now, white is the basis of all colors, and the color of snow is white to the utmost; how could there be anything surpassing this color? / Wansong says: Since it is called a color, it must face the eye. What surpasses the color white is only that which has no color, which does not face the eye. This is why Yunmen said, "At that moment, I would have pushed it over for him." If you immediately recognize and cling to the place of utmost white where there is no white, you fall precisely into the formless realm. This is why Xuedou pointed out another living road: at the place where it was pushed over, he instead directed that it be helped up. / Foyan said, "If you support it and help it up here, what sort of orderly affair is that?" / Wansong says: Were it another school or different faction, I would not say it cannot be done; yet you must further know that there is the Dongshan family style where at the very moment of falling it rises, and at the very moment of rising it falls. Thereafter, rising and falling are simultaneous, and neither rising nor falling is established. Even if you buy more straw sandals and travel for thirty years, you will not see it. / Fojue's verse says: "Pointing it out to others without surpassing the single color, / Stretching and yawning in the world of pure silver; / Supremely pushing it over and helping it up again— / How could that match the fresh warmth of the east wind's sunny day?" / Wansong says: After the sun comes out, a total embarrassment. / Some students, seeing Yunmen push it over and Xuedou help it up, immediately interpret it as a shift in sharp dynamics, an unobstructed great functioning; or seeing it on the side of the single color, they interpret it on the side of not being color, taking that as the ancestral lineage. Fojue has already testified to this; if you do not believe it, ask Tiantong further. His verse says:
