> The Master said: Fayan went up to address the assembly before the meal and pointed to the blind with his hand. Two monks went together to roll up the blind. Fayan said, "One has it, one loses it." / Dongshan Qi said, "How do you Venerables understand this? Some say that because they did not understand the essential meaning, they immediately went to roll up the blind. Others say that the one who pointed understood, while the one who went without pointing lost it. Can one understand it this way or not? Since understanding it this way is not permitted, let me ask: Venerables, which one has it, and which one loses it?" / Wansong says: Washing a clod of dirt in the mud. / This was not only Fayan. One day Nanquan said to a monk, "A fine wind last night." The monk also said, "A fine wind last night." Nanquan said, "It blew down and snapped a pine tree in front of the gate." The monk also said, "It blew down and snapped a pine tree in front of the gate." Nanquan then said to another monk, "A fine wind last night." The monk said, "What wind?" Nanquan said, "It blew down and snapped a pine tree in front of the gate." The monk said, "What pine?" Nanquan said, "One has it, one loses it." / The case of pointing to the blind has an exceptional strategy for guiding people. The two monks rolling up the blind: on each person's part, there were naturally two different paths. Fayan stamped them beforehand with a single seal, sealed firmly with no further alteration. On Fayan's part: light and dark intermingle, a dynamic of killing and bringing to life; the realm of great beings, known by Samantabhadra. The various quarters all consider leaving behind gain and loss and forgetting right and wrong to be supreme. Fayan ran right into the sea of right and wrong, into the pit of gain and loss, to make his living. For only one who is free of gain and loss can determine the gain and loss of the world. / When Wansong brings it up like this, there is also gain and loss. When you all come forward like this, there is also gain and loss. Only one who deeply understands the origins of advantage and harm can weigh their loss and gain. Sun calls this a ready-made gong'an that does not require re-examination. Because he could not settle it decisively, Tiantong could not avoid instigating a lawsuit. His verse says:
