> The Master said: Tiantong's benevolence and righteousness are first judged at the place of poverty; worldly sentiments incline toward wealthy families. Wansong says: In setting up a gate and courtyard, he was not as good as Jiufeng; but in profound talk entering into principle, he was still a hundred paces ahead of the head monk. Venerable Shengmo composed a poem on history in the Ancestral Hall: / "The former head monk died in vain amid a single wisp of smoke; / Jiufeng was not depressing an eminent worthy. / If one takes the one color as the succession, / one fails the late master's condition of not borrowing." / Shishuang instructed the assembly, saying: "Not having yet forgotten illumination is still external succession, being of the minister's seed; it is also called 'borrowing.' If there is birth, without the slightest separation, like a prince being born, then one can succeed to the great throne; this is called 'internal succession,' named the 'king's seed.' Name and phrase are 'not borrowing.' Borrowing is merely the matter on the side of the one color. When unavoidable, responding to faculties and benefiting beings is 'carrying along.'" Branding the forehead and the flying dragon also refer to the fish transforming at Yu's Gate, and also to the Nine in the Fifth Place of the Qian hexagram in the Book of Changes: 'A flying dragon in the heavens,' an image of attaining the position. How could this be compared to the crane's dream in the moonlit nest or the person bewildered in the snowhouse? Do you still recognize the place where Shishuang transmitted to Jiufeng? Plucking open the perfume sachet, it scents the great realm; poking open the celestial aperture, the true wind roars.
