> I tell you practitioners who penetrate the mystery: / Staff and shout must be applied at the opportune moment. / If you understand the true and exact purport, / At midnight the sun blazes forth. Zhuan (named Shigui, a son of the Shi family of Chengdu, an heir of Foyan) instructed the assembly, saying: “Linji said: ‘Within a single phrase, there must be possessed the three mysterious gates; within one mysterious gate, there must be possessed the three essentials.’ Great assembly, because of these careful instructions, affairs arose, and turning over and over, errors appeared. Listen to a verse: ‘What is difficult to penetrate within the phrase are the three mysteries; / A single phrase encompasses all before the kalpa of voidness. / Linji’s life-root was originally never severed; / A single red thread is pulled in his hand.’”
