> "What is shared merit?"
> The Master said, "Not obtaining form."
> He also said, "Plain powder makes it hard to sink traces; one does not dwell long in Chang'an."
> (Dahui said: "'Shared merit' means that phenomena and environment match each other. Answering 'Not obtaining form' means that phenomena and environment must not become a single form. At the very moment of function, that which is non-function is revealed; non-function is function. If made into a single form, it is completely dead words. The ancestral teachings of Dongshan taboos completely fixed words; therefore he said 'not obtaining form'—these are living words.")
