> As for the Caodong school, its family tradition is meticulous, with words and actions corresponding to each other. It benefits beings according to their capacity, engaging people directly through words, observing where they come from. Suddenly there are those who recognize the upright within the partial; suddenly there are those who recognize the partial within the upright; suddenly there is integration; suddenly sameness, suddenly difference. It instructs them with the Five Ranks of Upright and Partial, the Four Guests and Hosts, the Five Ranks of Merit, the Five Ranks of Lord and Vassal, the Five Ranks of the Prince, internal and external succession, and such matters. / As for the Five Ranks of Upright and Partial: the partial within the upright is the substance giving rise to function; the upright within the partial is function returning to substance; arrival within integration is substance and function arriving together; attainment within integration is substance and function both vanishing. / The Four Guests and Hosts are not the same as those of Linji: the guest within the host is function within substance; the host within the guest is substance within function; the guest within the guest is function within function—putting a head on top of a head; the host within the host is the mutual forgetting of object and self, person and phenomena both vanishing, not being involved in the ranks of upright and partial. / The Five Ranks of Merit clarify the ranks of training and inquiry up to the rank of non-merit. / The Five Ranks of Lord and Vassal clarify the conditioned and the unconditioned. / The Five Ranks of the Prince clarify that internal succession is inherently complete, while external succession has an end and a beginning. / In general, the Caodong family tradition does not go beyond substance and function, upright and partial, host and guest, to clarify the one transcendent road. Do you wish to see Caodong? / Before the buddhas and patriarchs were born, beyond the kalpa of voidness; / Upright and partial do not fall into the dynamic of existence and non-existence.
