> Such a dharma, / The buddhas and patriarchs secretly transmitted. / Now that you have obtained it, / You should protect it well. / A silver bowl filled with snow; / A bright moon concealing an egret. / Classified, they are not the same; / Blended, one knows where they are. / The meaning is not in words, / Yet it responds to the incoming dynamic. / Moved, it creates a rut; / Erring, one falls into hesitation. / Turning away and touching are both wrong, / Like a great mass of fire. / If it is merely depicted in fine patterns, / It then belongs to defilement. / Bright at midnight; / Unrevealed at dawn. / Serving as a model for beings, / Its application uproots all sufferings. / Although it is not conditioned, / It is not without words. / As if facing a precious mirror, / Form and reflection gaze upon each other: / You are not it; / It is precisely you. / Like an infant in the world, / Fully endowed with five aspects: / Neither going nor coming, / Neither arising nor abiding, / Babbling and cooing, / With words, without words; / In the end nothing is obtained, / Because the words are not yet correct. / In the doubled Li hexagram with six lines, / Upright and partial mutually interpenetrate. / Piled up to make three; / Exhausting the permutations, they become five. / Like the taste of the five-flavor herb; / Like the diamond vajra pestle. / In the upright, the wondrously embraced; / Striking and singing arise together. / Penetrating the tenet, penetrating the path, / Embracing the band, embracing the road: / Intermingling brings good fortune; / It must not be violated. / Naturally true and wondrous, / It does not belong to delusion or enlightenment. / Through causes, conditions, and times, / Quiet and clearly evident. / So fine it enters the spaceless; / So vast it cuts off all dimensions. / An error of a hair's breadth / Fails to accord with the musical pitch. / Now there are the sudden and the gradual, / Due to which tenets are established. / Once tenets are distinguished, / Standards are set. / Whether tenets are penetrated or extreme, / The truly constant flows. / Outwardly still, inwardly agitated, / Like a tethered colt or a crouching rat. / Former sages pitied them / And served as Dharma benefactors. / Following their inversions, / They took black for white. / When inverted thoughts are extinguished, / The affirming mind naturally consents. / If you wish to match the ancient track, / Please observe the ancients. / When the Buddha path was on the verge of completion, / For ten kalpas he contemplated the tree. / Like a tiger missing a tooth; / Like a horse with white fetlocks. / Because there is the base, / There are jeweled tables and precious delicacies. / Because there is the astonishing, / There are wildcats and white oxen. / Yi with his skill / Shot the mark at a hundred paces. / When arrow points meet head-on, / What does skill have to do with it? / The wooden man begins to sing; / The stone woman rises to dance. / Not reachable by emotional consciousness, / How could it tolerate deliberation? / The vassal serves the lord; / The son obeys the father. / Not obeying is not filial; / Not serving is not assisting. / Silently operating in secret, / Appearing stupid, like an idiot: / Only being able to sustain this / Is called the host within the host.
