Whenever the master met a monk, he would deliberately look at him and say, "Jian!" If the monk deliberated, he would say, "Yi!" His disciples recorded this as "Gu, jian, yi." Later, Yuanming Mi deleted the character gu ("look") and called it "chougu" (extracting the look). Later descendants lost its meaning; when receiving people, they called glaring with angry eyes "stimulating alertness," called it "not acknowledging sound and form," and called it "recognizing it as soon as it is raised." Passing it down among themselves, they took it to be the eye of the Way. Beita Zuo once laughed at this and therefore composed a gāthā, which contained the words: "Even if Zhang Liang had much wisdom and cunning, in the end, it would be difficult to apply here." In this text, what is called "deludedly establishing encounters of the eye of the Way, mistakenly creating distinctions in sounds and forms" refers to this. (Newly added).
