The sun and moon cannot reach it with their light; heaven and earth cannot cover or bear it up. When the kalpa-fire destroys the world, it remains ever tranquil; when the myriad dharmas perish, its complete essence is laid bare. Adapting to conditions without changing, in the midst of turmoil it is constantly serene. From this one beam of gracious light, who is left without a share? The Avataṃsaka Sūtra says: 'The lands preach, sentient beings preach, and the realms of the three times preach all at once.' (An ancient master commented: "Searching for fire, one finds it along with smoke; carrying water from the spring, one returns home bearing the moon. A rock grows a rootless tree; a mountain encloses an unmoving cloud.")
