> "The samādhi of one practice means constantly practicing the straightforward mind at all times—whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down. The Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra says: 'The straightforward mind is the place of enlightenment; the straightforward mind is the pure land.' Do not let your mind practice deceit and flattery while your mouth speaks of the Dharma being straightforward, speaking with your mouth of the samādhi of one practice while not practicing the straightforward mind—that is not a disciple of the Buddha. Simply practice the straightforward mind and be without attachment toward all dharmas; this is called the samādhi of one practice. Deluded people cling to the marks of dharmas and grasp at the samādhi of one practice, asserting that sitting motionless and eliminating delusions without giving rise to thoughts is itself the samādhi of one practice. If it were like this, this teaching would be the same as insentient objects, and would instead be a cause and condition that obstructs the Way. The Way must flow freely; why obstruct it instead? When the mind does not abide in dharmas, the Way flows freely; abiding is being bound. If sitting motionless were it, Vimalakīrti would not have scolded Śāriputra for quietly sitting in the forest. Kalyāṇamitras! Furthermore, I have seen people teach others to sit, contemplating the mind and contemplating purity, not moving and not arising, dedicating their efforts to this. Deluded people, not awakened, grasp at this and become deranged; there are hundreds of such people teaching the Way in this manner, hence one knows it is a great mistake.
