> Chan Master Huairang was a son of the Du family of Jinzhou. He first visited National Master An of Mount Song, who sent him to Caoxi to question and inquire. When Huairang arrived and bowed, the Master said, "Where do you come from?"
> He said, "From Mount Song."
> The Master said, "What thing comes thus?"
> He said, "To say it is like a thing would miss the mark."
> The Master said, "Can it still be cultivated and verified?"
> He said, "It cannot be said there is no cultivation and verification, but it cannot be defiled."
> The Master said, "Just this non-defilement is what all buddhas mindfully protect. You are like this, and I am also like this. Prajñātāra of Western India prophesied that under your feet will emerge a colt who will trample all the people of the world to death. This will be realized in your mind; you need not speak of it prematurely." (One edition lacks the twenty-seven characters from 'Western India' onward.)
> Huairang had a breakthrough understanding and thereupon served at his side for fifteen years, attaining deeper subtleties day by day. Later he went to Nanyue and greatly expounded the Chan school. (Imperially bestowed the posthumous title Chan Master Dahui.)
