> Chan Master Xuanjue of Yongjia was a son of the Dai family of Wenzhou. In his youth he studied the sūtras and treatises, and became adept in the Tiantai method of cessation and contemplation. Through reading the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra, he illuminated the ground of the mind. It happened that the Master's disciple Xuance visited him, and in deep conversation with him, Xuanjue's words tacitly coincided with all the patriarchs. Ce said, "From which master did you, virtuous one, receive the Dharma?"
> He said, "When I listened to the Vaipulya sūtras and treatises, each had a lineage of masters. Later, through the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra, I awakened to the Buddha Mind school, but have had no one to verify it."
> Ce said, "Prior to the King of the Majestic Voice it was permissible; after the King of the Majestic Voice, those who awaken on their own without a master are all naturalistic heretics."
> He said, "I wish you, virtuous one, would verify it for me."
> Ce said, "My words carry little weight. At Caoxi there is the Great Master the Sixth Patriarch, to whom people gather from the four quarters like clouds, all receiving the Dharma. If you go, I will travel with you."
> Jue then accompanied Ce to pay homage. He circumambulated the Master three times, struck his staff, and stood there. The Master said, "Now, a śramaṇa is endowed with the three thousand deportments and eighty thousand fine conducts. From where has the Great Worthy come to give rise to such great conceit?"
> Jue said, "The matter of birth and death is great; impermanence is swift."
> The Master said, "Why do you not embody non-arising and understand what is not swift?"
> He said, "The substance is non-arising; understanding fundamentally has no swiftness."
> The Master said, "So it is, so it is!"
> Only then did Xuanjue assume full deportment and bow, and in a moment bade farewell. The Master said, "Are you not returning too swiftly?"
> He said, "Fundamentally there is no motion; how could there be swiftness?"
> The Master said, "Who knows there is no motion?"
> He said, "The virtuous one himself gives rise to discrimination."
> The Master said, "You have very well grasped the meaning of non-arising."
> He said, "How could non-arising have a meaning?"
> The Master said, "Without meaning, who discriminates?"
> He said, "Discrimination is also not meaning."
> The Master said, "Splendid! Stay for a night."
> At the time, he was called the 'Awakened One of a Single Night.' Later he composed the Song of Attaining the Way, which circulated widely in the world. (Posthumously titled Great Master Wuxiang, and at the time referred to as Zhenjue.)
