"At daybreak, the Patriarch summoned Court Academician Lu to paint the illustrations on the wall of the south corridor. Suddenly seeing the verse, he told him: 'Academician, you need not paint after all; I have troubled you to come from afar. The sūtra says: "All characteristics are illusory." We shall just keep this verse for people to recite and uphold. Cultivating according to this verse, one will avoid falling into evil destinies; cultivating according to this verse brings great benefit.' He ordered the disciples to burn incense and pay homage, and all to recite this verse, so that they would attain seeing into their nature. Reciting the verse, the disciples all praised it, saying: 'Excellent!'
