> Question: People of the world pursue various kinds of learning; why do they not attain the Way? Answer: Because they see a self, they do not attain the Way. The 'self' is the 'I'. When the perfected person encounters suffering, they do not grieve; when meeting joy, they do not rejoice—because they do not see a self. Thus, not knowing suffering and joy is due to forgetting the self, arriving at emptiness and non-being. When the self itself is already obliterated, what else is there that is not obliterated?
