> He answered: 'All activities are the function of the Buddha's wisdom. It is like people using fire: it does not abhor the fragrant or the foul. It is also like water: neither the pure nor the defiled pollutes it. This exemplifies the Buddha's wisdom.' Thus we know that fire has no discrimination, burning both orchid and mugwort alike; water is like the highest virtue, conforming to round or square vessels as required. This is why Mañjuśrī held a sword against Gautama, and Aṅgulimāla held a knife against the Śākya; how could these not be Buddha-activities? If one sees dharmas outside the mind and gives rise to discrimination, even if one extensively performs superior and wondrous deeds, it is still not ultimate.
