> Answer: While both defiled and pure seeds possess the principle of perfuming, their increase and decrease differ. When pure dharmas perfume, they diminish the fundamental consciousness; when defiled dharmas perfume, they increase the fundamental consciousness. As the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: 'The transformation of the basis is called the dharmakāya. Due to the perfuming of hearing, four dharmas are accomplished: first, faithful joy in the Mahāyāna, which is the seed of great purity; second, prajñāpāramitā, which is the seed of the great self; third, the space-receptacle samādhi, which is the seed of great bliss; fourth, great compassion, which is the seed of great permanence. This perfuming impression of hearing and the four dharmas are the seeds of the four virtues. When the four virtues are perfected, the fundamental consciousness is entirely exhausted. The four virtues are originally existent and are not produced from seeds; names are assigned from their cause, hence they are called seeds. This perfuming impression of hearing is not produced to augment the fundamental consciousness, but is produced to extinguish and diminish the power and influence of the fundamental consciousness. It can counteract the fundamental consciousness, and because its nature is contrary to the fundamental consciousness, it is not subsumed under the nature of the fundamental consciousness.' As for impure seeds, they are produced through perfuming impressions and augment the fundamental consciousness; this is their difference from pure seeds.
