> Answer: Because cause and fruition are both subsumed under the wholesome nature, it is called exclusively wholesome. By nature, all uncontaminated dharmas accord with principle and conflict with transmigration; they are neither unwholesome nor indeterminate. Furthermore, the Mahāyānasaṃgraha says: 'However, the eighth consciousness has in total two stages: 1. The contaminated stage, subsumed under the indeterminate nature, associating solely with the five dharmas of contact and the rest, taking as its object only the previously described appropriated loci. 2. The uncontaminated stage, subsumed exclusively under the wholesome nature, associating with twenty-one mental factors: namely, the five omnipresent, the five particular-state, and the eleven wholesome \[factors\]. Because it constantly associates with all minds; because it constantly delights in realizing and knowing the observed objects; because it constantly maintains and settles the observed objects; because it constantly and clearly recollects previously experienced objects; because the World-Honoured One never has an unfocused mind; because it constantly discerns all dharmas; because extremely pure faith and the rest constantly associate with it; because it is free of defilement; and because it is free of distraction. This \[stage\] also associates solely with equanimity feeling, because it evolves spontaneously, constantly, and with equanimity at all times; taking all dharmas as its focal objects, because the mirror-like wisdom universally cognizes all dharmas.'
