> Answer: It is not the primary reason (hetu); rather, it is merely an inserted word at the start of the reason to eliminate a fallacy. Nor is it that the Hīnayāna does not accept it while the Mahāyāna accepts it on its own. The reason applies over the subject (dharmin), and all three members are shared (sādhāraṇa). First, the thesis (pakṣa) and reason are explained; afterward, questions and answers are set forth. The first section has two parts: first, distinguishing the thesis, and next, explaining the reason. Now, in the first \[part\], the thesis: the previous subject-phrase states five characters, 'In ultimate truth, universally established matter' (zhengu jicheng se). The single character 'matter' (se) is precisely the subject. The remaining four characters merely protect against fallacies. First, regarding the protection against fallacies by the two characters 'in ultimate truth' (zhengu): they eliminate the fallacy of contradiction with worldly convention (loka-viruddha) and the fallacy of contradiction with scriptural authority (āgama-viruddha).
