> Answer: It is merely the simultaneous, confused mental consciousness. Because the eye-faculty is damaged, it causes the simultaneous mental consciousness to take objects in a confused manner, and so it transforms blue into yellow. In reality, the eye-consciousness does not engage in taking blue or yellow \[as conceptual designations\]. When the mental faculty is damaged, the mental consciousness is also damaged. For example, upon the first bhūmi the two grasings—at self and at dharmas—immediately become uncontaminated. At this time, the mental faculty is overthrown, lacking those two grasings; the consciousness capable of taking objects is also able to destroy the two grasings. Therefore, we know that because it is produced relying on the faculty, it receives the name "eye-consciousness"; it is established solely in accordance with the faculty. Dharmapāla said: "The substances of the six consciousnesses are each distinct, yet their names are established merely relying on the faculties and spheres. If one clings to a single consciousness being able to perceive the six spheres: if six spheres arrive at the same time, how could a single mental consciousness perceive them all at the same time? If they arose sequentially, it would not be pervasive." Therefore, following the distinct kinds of the six faculties and spheres, they derive their names relying on the faculties.
