> It answers: "All these characteristics are characteristics of consciousness. If there is consciousness, there are inhalation, exhalation, glancing, blinking, life-span, and so forth; if consciousness departs from the body, there are none. If you say that the self is permanent and all-pervading, a dead person should also have glancing, blinking, inhalation, exhalation, life-span, and so forth. Furthermore, inhalation, exhalation, and the rest are material dharmas (rūpadharma), moving and initiating through the force of the wind that follows citta; these are characteristics of consciousness, not characteristics of a self. Life-span is a saṃskāra associated with citta; it is also a characteristic of consciousness."
