> Answer: 'Because having attained selflessness, one immediately cuts off the causes and conditions of evil karma; devoid of those causes and conditions, one does not receive retribution. It is not that whether there is a self or no self determines receiving or not receiving. Therefore, the sūtra says: "Due to causes and conditions dharmas cease," and so forth—this is what it means. When thoroughly examined in accordance with reality, a self is unattainable. Therefore, there is no self; there are only the six sense faculties. The external grasping of "mine" posits the external division as having the six sense objects; they are not genuinely what belongs to a self.'
