> Answer: This was already explained in detail earlier; why cling to it again? In one mind having four divisions, there is no discrepancy between principle and teaching. Only when there is an object and there is a mind is consciousness-only established. For when the mind cognizes an object, it must have a nimittabhāga; just as when a mirror reflects a face, there is a shadow-image of the face. The syllogism is: The subject (pakṣa) is: the mind cognizing an object; The thesis (sādhya) is: it must carry the shadow-image of the object upon the mind; The reason (hetu) is: because the mind faces an external substance; The matching example (dṛṣṭānta) is: like when a mirror reflects a face.
