> Answer: In the stage of intermediate existence, the sixth consciousness first gives rise to craving to moisten rebirth; as for grasping to link rebirth, it is exclusively the eighth. If it is a male intermediate existence, conditions toward the mother give rise to craving, producing a lustful mind; if a female intermediate existence, conditions toward the father give rise to craving, producing a lustful mind. Having given rise to these two kinds of craving minds, it regards its own body as uniting with the loved object; the discharged impurity flows into the womb, which it assumes to be its own possession, and subsequently joy arises. Once this mind has arisen, the intermediate existence body immediately vanishes, and it receives the body of the existence of birth. The Ratnakūṭasūtra says: when that intermediate existence body enters the maternal womb, its mind becomes inverted, forming erroneous interpretations, conceiving notions of cold, of great wind and rain, or of clouds and mist. Having formed these notions, in accordance with the superiority or inferiority of its karma, it further gives rise to ten kinds of false thoughts: 1. 'I enter a residence.' 2. 'I ascend a multistoried tower.' 3. 'I ascend a palace hall.' 4. 'I ascend a couch.' 5. 'I enter a grass hut.' 6. 'I enter a thatched cottage.' 7. 'I enter a thicket.' 8. 'I enter a forest.' 9. 'I enter a hole in a wall.' 10. 'I enter between fences.' Having formed these thoughts, it immediately enters the maternal womb.
