The treatise says: "From beginningless time, relying on the basic consciousness, there are untainted seeds. Because they are repeatedly perfumed and activated by the evolving consciousnesses and so forth, they gradually increase and excel, until at the time of ultimate buddhahood, one transforms and abandons the originally defiled seeds of consciousness, and transforms and attains the newly arisen pure seed-consciousness, which maintains all seeds of merit. By the power of original vows, throughout the reaches of the future, it gives rise to all wondrous functions in unending continuation. From this one should know that there is only internal consciousness." The commentary says: "Because naturally inherent seeds are newly perfumed and activated, and by the power of original vows—that is, the World-Honoured Buddha's endless benefiting of others—the pure seed-consciousness encompasses both actualities and seeds, because only the eighth \[consciousness\] can uphold seeds.
