> Answer: What sentient beings see is simply confused vijñāna (bhrāntivijñāna). The Madhyāntavibhāga-bhāṣya says: "All the worldly realm is merely confused vijñāna." Why is this confused vijñāna called false? Because its objects are unreal and its substance is scattered and confused. Furthermore, if one grasps that there is permanently no confused vijñāna, then neither bondage nor liberation would be established, and one would then give rise to wrong views, denying both the pure and impure categories. Therefore, we know that obtaining awakening by relying on delusion is not without cause; entering sagehood from the ordinary has its reasons. Just as a reflected image reveals the brightness of a mirror, it is through erroneous vijñāna that true jñāna is accomplished.
