> Answer: There are three aspects. First, the gate of gradual relinquishment: halting evil and practicing good. Second, the gate of relinquishing characteristics: abandoning both good and evil. Third, the gate of benefiting in accord with characteristics: practicing both the defiled and the pure. This third gate further contains three senses: First, in terms of practice: one cultivates purity in one's own practice, yet conforms to defilement in transforming others. Second, in terms of persons: one conforms to defilement when transforming ordinary beings, and conforms to purity when transforming noble beings. Third, in terms of dharmas: conforming to worldly dharmas, one must manifest defilement; cultivating the bodhisattva Dharma, one must cultivate purity.
