> The Bhaddekarattasūtra says: 'The Buddha said: "Past dharmas should not be pursued in thought; future dharmas should not be sought with longing; present dharmas that have arrived should not be abided in or clung to. If one can be like this, one is liberated on the spot."
> Explanation: This conditioning of the objects of the three periods of time is the continuing consciousness. For a beginner who has not yet attained the state where not a single thought arises, if a prior thought suddenly arises, so long as the subsequent thought does not continue it, he will gradually accord \[with truth\]. If one wishes to eliminate them suddenly, directly contemplate a single thought: when it arises, its point of arising cannot be found; naturally the frontiers before and behind are severed, and it is empty and quiescent on the spot. As the Vajracchedikā-prajñāpāramitāsūtra says: 'Past citta cannot be found; future citta cannot be found; present citta cannot be found.' Because they cannot be found, they naturally do not continue.
