> The Ratnamegha Sūtra says: “How does a bodhisattva practice the smṛtyupasthāna of citta? Good sons, a bodhisattva reflects thus: ‘Citta is truly impermanent, yet one clings to it as permanent; it is truly suffering, yet one clings to it as pleasure; originally there is no self, yet one clings to it as a self; originally it is impure, yet one clings to it as pure. This citta is light and restless, never stopping even for a moment. Because it does not stop, it serves as the root for all defilements, destroying good paths, opening the gates to bad destinies, growing the three poisons, and acting as the causal condition for the upakleśas, being their master and guide. Furthermore, it can accumulate pure and impure karma, turning swiftly like a whirled firebrand, also like a galloping horse, burning like fire, surging like water, completely discerning all realms like worldly paintings.’ When a bodhisattva observes citta in this way, he then attains sovereignty. Having attained sovereignty, he is also without hindrance among all dharmas. This is called the bodhisattva’s skillful practice of the smṛtyupasthāna of citta.”
