> The Samyuktapiṭakasūtra says: 'For example, when two pieces of wood rub against each other, fire arises spontaneously and burns that wood in turn; the fire does not come out of the wind, does not come out of the water, does not come out of the earth. The four māras are also like this: they all arise from citta and do not come from the outside. For example, a painter paints an image, large or small according to his hand; although conditions come together—having pigment, board, and brush—if the painter does not paint, the image cannot be formed. The four māras are like this: when citta is already firm, nothing arises.' / Explanation: Thus, when the one mind is unmoving, dharmas do not appear before one, just as when the painter does not paint, there are no images. Therefore, the unmoving one mind has great merit. As the Dharmapadāvadānasūtra says: 'The Buddha said: "Good sons, a spiritual friend has great merit, being able to cause you to establish the Buddha-Dharma amidst greed, anger, ignorance, wrong views, the five hindrances, the five desires, and all the defiling toils. Not giving rise to the one mind has great merit. It is like a person who takes a sturdy ship and crosses the great ocean, arriving at the other shore without moving body or mind."'
