> Tripiṭaka Master Jueduo: The master was once traveling to Licun in Dingxiang County, Taiyuan, where he saw a disciple of Master Xiu who had tied grass to make a hut, sat alone, and was contemplating the mind. The master asked, 'What are you doing?' He replied, 'I am watching quietude.' The master said, 'Who is the one watching? What thing is quietude?' The monk had no reply. He asked, 'What is this principle? I beg the Master to instruct me.' The master said, 'Why not watch yourself? Why not quiet yourself?' Seeing that the man's faculties were hesitant and sluggish, the master then said, 'Who is your teacher?' He replied, 'Ven. Xiu.' The master said, 'Did your teacher only teach this method, or did he have another intended meaning?' \[The monk\] said, 'He only taught me to watch quietude.' The master said, 'This is a practice cultivated by inferior non-Buddhists in the Western Lands. In this land it is taken to be the Chan lineage! It greatly misleads people.' The monk asked the Tripiṭaka Master, 'Who is your teacher?' The master said, 'The Sixth Ancestor.' He also said, 'The true Dharma is difficult to hear; why do you not go there?' Having heard the master's instruction, the monk went straight to Caoxi, bowed to see the Sixth Ancestor, and recounted the matter in detail. The Ancestor said, 'It is truly as Jueduo said. Why not watch yourself? Why not quiet yourself? Whom are you having quiet you?' At these words, he was greatly awakened.
