> The eminent monk, Venerable Jietuo, practiced the contemplation of Buddha-light based on the Avataṃsaka. In the light on a clear, moonlit night, he suddenly saw a transformation Buddha, who uttered a verse, saying: / The secret, profound Dharma of all Buddhas, / Cultivated through vast kalpas, is only now attained. / If a person opens and clarifies this Dharma-gate, / All Buddhas will rejoice in accord. / Venerable Jietuo then bowed and asked, saying: 'How is this Dharma-gate to be disclosed to people?' The transformation Buddha thereupon concealed his body and disappeared, answering in verse from the sky: / The wisdom of expedient means serves as a lamp / To illuminate and see the object-fields of the mind. / If you wish to know the true Dharma, / There is nothing whatsoever to be seen.
