> Master Ming of the Sui dynasty, in his Rongxin lun (Treatise on Harmonizing the Mind), said: When a consummate capacity meets the teaching, there is no teaching that is not consummate. When the mind of principle engages in phenomena, there is no phenomenon that is not principle. Since there is no phenomenon that is not principle, what disturbance is not settledness? With no disturbance that is not settledness, then both settledness and disturbance vanish. Since there is no phenomenon that is not principle, therefore principle and phenomena are both transcended. Extending this further, although one is free from the two extremes, there are no extremes that can be abandoned; although words leave behind the four propositions, in truth there is no proposition that can be eliminated. This point is abstruse and profound, understood through harmonizing the mind. If one uses the mind to harmonize the mind, that is not harmonizing the mind. The mind is constantly as it truly is; what is there to harmonize? When in reality no mind is established, that is called harmonizing the mind.
