> The Commentary on the Awakening of Faith says: 'Now, the true mind is vast and open, transcending words and images beyond fish trap and rabbit snare; profound and subtle, obliterating object and wisdom within subject and object. It is neither born nor extinguished, not moved by the four characteristics; it has neither coming nor going, and the three times cannot alter it. Yet, taking non-abiding as its nature, it branches off along different currents, rising or sinking according to delusion or awakening, arising and perishing at the mercy of causes and conditions. Although manifoldly surging and leaping, it has never moved from the source of the mind; although serenely reflecting and vacantly congealing, it has never diverged from karmic retribution. Therefore, it causes the nature to remain unchanged while undergoing conditioned origination, so that defilement and purity are perpetually distinguished; yet without abandoning conditions, it is immediately true, so that ordinary beings and sages are of one accord. It is just like the waves being none other than the movement of water, so that one distinguishes the waves right within the water; and water being none other than the wetness of the movement, so that one clarifies the water right within the waves. In this way, movement and stillness interpenetrate; the ultimate and conventional are both harmonized; and birth-and-death and nirvāṇa are evenly and equally threaded together.'
