Shi Cong of Mount Tai says in the Secrets of the Laṅkāvatārasūtra: "Speaking of the essentials of the Buddhadharma, the overarching principle does not go beyond citta as its great purport. Therefore, the Laṅkāvatārasūtra takes citta as its principal source. Thus it says: 'The Buddha's word takes citta as the source, and gatelessness as the Dharma-gate.' That which is called citta refers to the Buddha's word, citta. That which is called the source refers to the actual place of citta. It also says: 'In delusion, myriad confusions burden citta; in understanding, true illumination is the dharmadhātu. In delusion, birth and death are tumultuous; in understanding, nirvāṇa is constantly quiescent.' Though delusion and understanding differ, none fail to be the concealment and manifestation of the one mind." The Tripiṭaka Master says: "The category of sentient beings is the Buddha-field of the bodhisattva. Examining these six consciousnesses, they are precisely the ultimate fruit; yet the confused constantly generate \[concepts of\] delusion and understanding throughout the day."
