Answer: The authoritative proofs are not one. The \*Sūtra of Perfect Enlightenment\* says: 'For example, like the light of the eye illuminating the objective sphere before it, its light being complete, it has no aversion or love.' This can prove that the five sense faculties are direct perception (pratyakṣa) and do not produce conceptual discrimination (vikalpa). Wherever that light of the eye reaches, there is no before or after; it never rejects an enemy and accepts a friend, nor loves the beautiful and detests the ugly. Likewise, for instance, the ear faculty does not distinguish sounds of blame from praise; the nose faculty does not avoid odors whether fragrant or foul; the tongue faculty does not discriminate tastes whether sweet or bitter; the body faculty does not block touches whether rough or smooth. Because at the moment of the spontaneous mind (sadyomind) there is no conceptual discrimination, as soon as it flows in an instant into the mental ground and seeking (vitarka) merely arises, it immediately falls into inference (anumāna); then defiled and pure minds arise, and sentiments of grasping and rejecting are produced.
