Answer: The ancient explanation says: it is the seeds of the five branches, such as consciousness, that require the moisture and irrigation of kleśas such as rāga before they can come forth into birth. As for the karma of innate delusions: they are the six innate \[kleśas\], the ten discriminative \[kleśas\], and the twenty upakleśas. Among these thirty-six kleśas, the single dharma of rāga alone is the principal among principals in moistening. The remaining five innate \[kleśas\] are assisting moisteners within the principal. The ten discriminative \[kleśas\] are assisting moisteners within the assisting. Furthermore, there is a fourfold analysis: 1. There is that which is rāga-craving and able to moisten rebirth: the craving of the sixth consciousness; because the first five consciousnesses are not powerful, they are merely subsumed as concomitant branches, while the principal is exclusively the sixth. 2. There is that which is rāga-craving but unable to moisten rebirth: namely, the seventh consciousness; although it possesses rāga-craving, it is due to an internal object, as well as that within the cognitive obscuration. 3. There is that which is the branch of birth and moistened by rāga-craving: namely, the branch of birth within the bodies of all ordinary beings. 4. There is that which is the branch of birth but not moistened by rāga-craving: for a bodhisattva in the final body, because the Mahāyāna explains it as a manifested apparition, or the branch of birth within the body of transformation.
