The Baoding jing says: 'The Buddha said: Kāśyapa, it is like a person who, fearing space, beats his chest and cries out, saying: Good friends, for my sake, remove this space, remove this space! Kāśyapa, what do you think? Can this space be removed or not? Kāśyapa said: It cannot, World-Honoured One. The Buddha said: Kāśyapa, if there are śramaṇas or brāhmaṇas who fear the emptiness of nature, I say that such persons have lost their minds and are deranged. Why is this? Kāśyapa, all phenomena are merely skillful means for expounding emptiness. If they fear this emptiness, why do they not fear all phenomena? If they cherish all phenomena, why do they not cherish this emptiness?'
