The Faxing lun says: “Indeed, we have heard from former awakened ones: ‘To embody emptiness and enter stillness, nothing takes precedence over seeing phenomena. In tracing phenomena to exhaust their source, nothing is more wondrous than attaining their nature.’ Attaining the nature, one illuminates the root; illuminating the root, one penetrates what is naturally so; penetrating what is naturally so, one sees dependent origination; seeing dependent origination, one thereby sees phenomena. Wishing to exhaust that source, one must preserve what is essential. As for what is essential and resides in function, is it not solely the phenomena of the mind? The phenomena of the mind are the animating spirit of consciousness, the quintessential illumination of pure awareness. Its operation embraces the myriad practices; its response to things accords with all categories. To speak of it comprehensively to the utmost, there is nothing where it is not.”
