The preface to the Shi'ermen lun says: “Those who compose treatises wish thereby to exhaust the source of the mind and penetrate its ultimate principle. If a single principle is not exhausted, then numerous differences will arise in confusion, leading to the divergence of deluded paths. If the single source is not plumbed, then multiple pathways will branch out, leaving traces of divergent directions. That divergent directions are not leveled and diverging paths are not eradicated is the sorrow of great beings.”
