> Answer: "If we speak in terms of the supreme, perfect capacities, whose great faculties are ripe, free from obstacles, who awaken頓 instantly and cultivate頓 instantly, if deluded thoughts do not arise, what need is there for aids to the Way? Generally, subtle thoughts cease only at the Buddha stage. Thus the \*Preface to the Ānāpānasmṛti Sūtra\* says: 'In the snap of a finger, the mind turns nine hundred and sixty times; in a day and a night, there are 1.3 billion thoughts. Each thought has a body, yet the mind is unaware of it, like a sower of seeds.' From this we know that the defilements of emotional dust are thick, and sudden purification is truly difficult; if not aided and opened by the myriad good practices, one's own power, it is feared, will become stagnant. Furthermore, if we discuss wholesome karma, within the gateway of universal practice, the myriad practices serve as adornment, not abandoning a single dharma, all able to aid the Way and reveal great bodhi; fully possessing the ten ways of upholding is also without obstruction. Thus the \*Saddharmapuṇḍarīka Sūtra\* says: 'At that time, the bodhisattva-mahāsattvas equal to the dust motes of a thousand worlds who had welled up from the earth all joined their palms with one mind before the Buddha, gazed reverently at the Honored Countenance, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One! After the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, in the lands where the emanations of the World-Honored One reside, in the place of parinirvāṇa, we will widely proclaim this sūtra. Why? Because we ourselves also wish to attain this truly pure, great Dharma, to uphold, read, recite, explain, copy, and make offerings to it."' From this we know that bodhisattvas who have ascended the grounds not only explain it for others, but also personally make vows to recite and uphold it; how much less should beginners not receive and practice it? One must only first seek faith, understanding, awakening, and entry, and then act according to the teachings; vocalizing with the mouth and pondering with the mind assist in opening correct wisdom. If one has not yet plumbed the ultimate principle, one may temporarily follow the text and words; though one does not personally and clearly comprehend it, it nevertheless perfumes wholesome roots. The majestic power of prajñā secretly assists at the beginning and the end; giving rise to a single subtle thought within the correct Dharma is entirely an initial cause, which is ultimately never abandoned in vain."
