> Answer: "If the mind is merged with the Buddha of the nature, and principle encompasses the true source, how could it rely on other conditions? It even forgets itself. If one distinguishes in accord with wisdom, establishing sequence where there is no sequence, though there appear to be ascending and descending, the fundamental position does not move. The great treasure of the sages is called rank; if there were no stages of practice, one would be a heavenly māra or an outsider. If regarded according to the gate of perfect fusion, it accords with the nature of the dharmadhātu, originally pure by itself. If regarded according to the gate of orderly succession, it accords with the marks of conventional truth, with former and later, shallow and deep. Now, perfect fusion does not obstruct orderly succession, suddenly accomplishing all practices, because one bhūmi is all bhūmis; orderly succession does not obstruct perfect fusion, universally accomplishing all practices, because it progressively advances the virtues of all ranks. Marking emptiness to discuss ranks, one constantly abides in the middle way. Not existing yet existing, the gradations are distinct; existing yet not existing, it is completely empty and still. Therefore the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra says: 'Subhūti asked the Buddha: "If all dharmas are ultimately non-existent, why do you speak of the first bhūmi up to the tenth bhūmi?" The Buddha said: "Because all dharmas are ultimately non-existent, there are the bodhisattva's first bhūmi up to the tenth bhūmi. If dharmas had a determinate nature, there would be no first bhūmi up to the tenth bhūmi."' Therefore, the thirty-seven factors are the gate trodden by bodhisattvas; the fifty-two ranks are the road cultivated by ancient buddhas. From the initial moment of mindfulness, cultivating perfectly in a single thought, up to the eighteen unique qualities, refining the three karmas, it is ultimately pure."
